Group unveils free skill acquisition programme for Abuja youths

A Non-Governmental Organisation, the Initiative for Outreach, Training and Youth Development, has launched a free skill acquisition programme for youths in the Wukara community in Abuja.

According to a statement on Thursday issued by the coordinator of the outreach in Wukara, Esther Gabriel, said the organisation’s objective is to equip youths with practical skills that encourage self-employment and independence.

“The programme is designed to promote self-reliance, reduce unemployment, and provide productive engagement for youths in the community. The programme, which commenced in December 2025, began with training in pastries and cake-making.

“We aim to expand the initiative to cover shoemaking, production of cleansers and sanitisers, bag making, videography, and photography – all aimed at equipping young people with practical, income-generating skills,” the statement read.

In his remarks, the founder of the organisation, Prof. Chiowa Uchendu, said the organisation aims to raise young people for “Godly and global relevance” through a combination of gospel mentorship and capacity-building initiatives.

“This latest initiative builds on IOTYD’s ongoing efforts to empower youths across different communities, providing them with practical skills and opportunities to thrive economically,” he said.

One of the trainers, Chinaza Ekwueme, praised the enthusiasm and commitment of the participants.

She said, “The young people of Wukara demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment, and eagerness to learn, which reflected the relevance and value of the programme to their personal and economic development.

“Their engagement, discipline, and collaboration throughout the sessions contributed significantly to the success of the training. The skill acquisition in Wukara was a huge success.”
